Green pensions
Did you know that you can influence where your pension is invested and align your investments with your beliefs? This can easily be done with your personal pension, or self-invested personal pension (SIPP), through ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) funds. However, you need to do your research first to ensure that the investments truly reflect your beliefs as some funds may still invest in companies such as Shell and BP despite being badged as ESG funds. You also need to be prepared to accept higher fees since more research and engagement is required to verify the credentials of the funds to ensure they meet certain criteria and qualify as ESG funds.
What you may not know is that you can also influence your company pension. If you feel strongly about where your company invests its pension funds, engage with the company and the Pension Plan's trustees. It may be that it is already invested in some ESG funds, or if not, you can engage with them to see if these can be offered as part of self-select funds (if your company scheme offers this).
